Yesterday my mum & I had a fabulous day out together at a pottery workshop with Maggie Donald in Parson Drove.
We had so much fun, it was nice to have a go at making things on a much larger scale than I am used to!
We each got to glaze a piece of Raku pottery - you paint on the glaze & then they get fired & then put into a pile of sawdust which catches fire & the smoke gets into the cracks in the glaze - it is very clever - below is the Raku pottery I glazed - the black areas had no glaze, the white were clear glaze & the copper colouring is where the fire oxidised the glaze (although don't quote me on the oxidising bit - I'm not 100% sure of my facts!)
After years of wanting to have a go on a potters wheel I finally had a go at throwing a pot - I made 2 little bowls & once they have been fired I can go back to glaze them. As well as my 2 bowls I made a heart shaped dish, 2 tiles & a little pot I am going to use for potpouri - all a little rustic & amateurish but I am very proud of my attempts!! Can't wait to glaze them & bring them home to brighten up my little house!
Maggie Donald runs a Beginners One Day Pottery Course in her studio in Parson Drove for £35 per person, including 1 piece of Raku pottery and a wonderful lunch (follow the link on the right of the page to The Wonderful World of ArtDonald)
